Did he partition the drive? What OS are you using? what size drive does the
BIOS detect?Can you boot from a floppy and run fdisk to see how big the
computer thinks the drive is?

You may need to run fdisk and delete the drive, then recreate the primary
partition, format the drive and reload the OS.  Make sure you have the
chipset drivers for your mother board if you have onboard sound and video
(there should be a CD that came with your computer or came with your system
board if you built your computer).

Also, call your Dads friend and ask him "what the ...?"  If he's that good a
friend and knows about computers, he should be able to fix it.
