I suspect this is why the previous owner wanted to part company with it. I
further suspect they checked out the cost of repair and unfortunately, you
now have the problem.

I'm not sure that it is the power switch itself. It may be the switch that
controls the screen. What I mean by this is, when you close the lid, a
switch is activated and the screen shuts off to save power. This is somewhat
of a safety feature to keep the unit from turning on or off when the lid is
closed.  On the other hand it may be a shorting ribbon cable to the screen.
In any case, I think the cost of repair will not be inexpensive.
