I suspect that I may have a virus on my PC. Problems started with Word crashing. Shortly after all Office applications were apparing as deinstalled and no programs were showing in the add/remove programs option. The PC then refused to boot, haiging in the Windows 98 screen. I downloaded a boot disk from NOSPIN for Windows 98. I can now run Scandisk but get the error

Scandisk encountered a data error reading while reading the FAT entry for cluster 241635

and hence scandisk cannot fix the drive.

What is the best next step to take bearing in mind I have some data I want to recover if possible ? Does this sound like a virus or the hard drive failing or both ?

Thanks in advance for any help
