Your Win3.1 disks should be write protected (no notch on the side of 5 1/4"
floppy).  Unless you stuck them to the 'fridge with a magnet, spilled
coffee into them, or went over them with a bulk eraser, they are probably
still good.  Try to read the directories on another system.

Odds are that it is the floppy drive that is dirty (use a non-abrasive
cleaning kit with pure Isopropyl Alcohol) or out of alignment (it can
read what it writes, but not disks written by properly aligned drives).

If it is out of alignment, it is probably cheaper and easier to replace
the drive than to realign it (requires special alignment disk to do
properly - which costs much more than the cost of a drive).

Caution.  If all your backups were written by an out-of-alignment floppy
drive, you will need that drive to read them.
