Thanks for such quick response on this issue.

Walter,

I will take your advice to use the Hardware troubleshooter. Sorry for long
post following.

The device does not appear in Device Manager.  I have a choice of setting it
for non PnP or PnP.  When I set it for PnP, upon reboot the computer will
begin to detect the device, as soon as it gets to the screen were it asks
for a driver, I get another blue screen.  If I set it for non PnP, then I
try to add it by "Add New Hardware" and as soon as the computer starts
checking for hardware I get a blue screen.  I now get this blue screen even
when the card is not inserted.  I am unable to get any new drivers because
this device is about 4 years old and no longer supported.

As for further background info;  I got a new HD for Christmas and I decided
to completely redo my system.  I removed all unnecessary cards, formatted
the HD and installed a clean WIN98SE install.  Then I installed the Adaptec
card w/o any problems.  Because of the HD, I had to install a "DriveMax"
bios card so that my system could handle the HD.  This then used up all my
slots and I still needed to install another card.  At this point all was
well with the computer hardware.  I still needed to install the last card so
I uninstalled the drivers for the Adaptec and removed the Adaptec to make
room since I don't use the CDR that often.

I then needed to use to CDR, pulled a card (after removing the drivers for
it!) and attempted to reinstall the Adaptec.  That's when all my problems
started with the computer which prompted my first post.

The most common problem with Windows 98 (SE included) is having a hardware
device that isn't working properly. The first thing you should try (if you
haven't already done so <g>) is read the Win98(SE) Help on hardware conflict
troubleshooting. After opening Help from the Start menu, just click
"Troubleshooting," or use the Help system's Index or Search tabs to access
specific topics. You can also usually solve hardware hassles by opening the
System control panel's Device Manager, removing the offending driver and
restarting (or even simply clicking "Refresh" right there in Device
Manager). This, "generally" will solve nearly all plug-and-play driver
problems. (If you need to update a device driver, check
http://www.microsoft.com/hwtest/hcl/ for a list of the latest updates.) If
Win98's (SE) plug-and-play re-detects the device, there is a good chance it
will configure itself correctly. If that doesn't work, and "Add New
Hardware" doesn't see the device, the next thing to try is disabling other
devices (check the device properties box labeled "Disable in this hardware
profile"). After restarting, check Device Manager to see if the device is
working. If so, re-enable the disabled devices one by one, restarting each
time.

Windows "Blue Screen" errors are typically caused by programs or device
drivers that are just plain incompatible with the version of Windows you are
running. If you haven't already, uninstall the application or device you
just installed to fix the problem. Obtain an updated version if possible.

list of drivers and related info.) I have taken in consideration that you
have performed all of the above procedures, but  I just want to ensure
myself and other list members that all of the troubleshooting avenues have
been covered.  HTH.  :-)
