This opens up a can of worms... (There are several ways this "might"
have been done, or "could" be done now...)
Please write to the list and give the model number from the current
CD-Rom drive, (if any).

Is this a _replacement_ drive? With that age machine, there is a good
chance a replacement CD-ROM drive might need to be ONE of several
different types that "used to" plug into the sound card, (or other places
NOT being the Mother Board.)
Some "looked the same" and used the same type cable as the "then current"
Hard Drives (40 pin/40 wire), but the drives where "sound card" vendor specific.
If you can't match the currnet type drive, follow the instructions below IF you
have a space on a Mother Board cable to plug it in.

If your current CD-ROM (if any) drive "wide ribbon cable" (the data cable) plugs
directly into the motherboard, (or is on the cable with the hard drive),
THEN you should be able to use a generic ATA (PATA, IDE/EIDE) type drive.
(You might have to set your BIOS so it can see it.)

If there is no CD-Rom drive now, get an old used ATA/IDE type CD-Rom drive.
I have gotten them for as little as $10 when they were only a couple years old
(and that was a LONG time ago...) I have a drawer full of them...

Any questions?, please write them to the list (and give the model number from the
current CD-Rom drive, (if any).)
