If you had the correct driver for this printer it should have the inf and dll's in it.  I suspect it is a USB printer.  It should have come with aa user guide or manual for the installation.  If you no longer have that you'll have to download it from Compaq or HP.  I would check to make sure the HP driver you downloaded is the correct one for a Compag printer (is it pre HP/Compaq merger or post merger?)
