I have had this problem with Win 98 SE on a Tyan S1854 Trinity 400 mobo. I have had a complete installation running for weeks or months, then it starts installing hardware for no apparent reason. I've had as many as 4 default monitors, two of each IDE channel, many mice, and doubles of all my drives. I've gone into safe mode and uninstalled everything, but after a while it will do that again. It seems attracted to installing default monitors lately. When it does this, often it will freeze up during the boot requiring me to go into safe mode and remove the duplicates.
