Many thanks to you all for the information supplied.

I took onboard your comments and went back to the shop. The outcome was
this; new power supply, additional cooling fan and replacement of graphics
card (just to be on the safe side).

The PC is now working beautifully!!

In my opinion it was probably the cooling of the AMD Athlon chip (2.6mhz)
that was causing the problem, but I'm no expert. Saturday was one of the
hottest days we've had here in Nottingham this year and the new PC was
noticeably hotter than the other PC that I have.

I'm assuming you can boot up normally, and this happens after a certain
amount of time., correct?
Without knowing exactly what processor you have, I'd be most likely to
say it sounds like it's overheating. The newer processors (AMDs
especially, but a Pentium 4 also) are very heat sensitive, and need a lot
of cooling power.
Is it possible that one of the fans (or their connectors) came loose as it
was brought back from the shop? If you're comfortable opening the case,
check and see if that's the problem.
It's also possible that this kit (it would help to have more info on what
came with it) just didn't have enough cooling power supplied in the first
place.
If you bought this kit from the shop that built it, I'd certainly give them
a
call and have them fix the problem.
