Subject: [PCBUILD] Problem with Sound Blaster Live
Hi list!!
My problem:
Two days ago i installed in my system a new sound card (Sound Blaster Live!
Value CT4830 PCI) and now when try to load Windows, always receive a blue
screen and the following error:
A FATAL EXCEPTION 0E HAS OCCURRED AT 0028:C15D2A3B IN VXD EMU10K1(01) +
0000B71B.
THE CURRENT APPLICATION WILL BE TERMINATED.
I press any key and Windows run then, but without any sound.
My System:
CPU P!!!-600EB
Motherboard Acer Open AX63 Pro (Chipset Via Apollo Pro) BIOS Version 1.20
128 MB RAM (PC133)
HDD Fujitsu 17.2 GB (2)
FDD 1.44 MB
CD ROM drive Acer Open 52X (MTRP)
CD Writer HP 8210
Ethernet controller.
ATI Rage 128 (AGP 16 MB)
When the first time i received the error, i tried the following steps:
- Reinstall SB Live drivers (New update for Win 9x downloaded from web).
- Change the interrupt used to this PCI slot.
At this time i don't know how i can resolve this trouble.

You did not mention which OS you are running, just Windows so these
directions should work for Win95 or Win98. If you have not done so you
should update your BIOS and drivers for the VIA Apollo Pro also. You should
also upgrade to Liveware 3 if you are using Liveware 2.
EMU10K is used by the Sound Blaster Emulation. It is needed if you are
going to be playing games in DOS. The Sound Blaster Emulation does not like
to share an IRQ with any other device and most people have had the best luck
with setting it to IRQ 5. If you are not going to be playing games in DOS
then you can disable the Sound Blaster Emulation. It can be found in Device
Manger under "Creative Miscellaneous Devices". The Sound Blaster Live uses
2 IRQ's, one for the Sound Blaster Emulation and One for the Sound Blaster
Live card. When you changed the IRQ of the PCI slot you only changed the
IRQ of the Sound Blaster card. Windows does not do a good job of assigning
an IRQ to the Sound Blaster Emulation.
To disable the Sound Blaster emulation you will need to go to Device Manager
by right clicking the "My Computer" icon and selecting "Properties". Select
the "Device Manger" tab, expand the "Creative Miscellaneous Devices".
Select the "CreativeSB16 Emulation" and select "Properties" button. At the
bottom of the "General" page check the "Disable in this hardware profile",
click "OK". Now you must also REM entries in your Autoexec.bat and
Config.sys. Go to "Start", select "Run", and type 'sysedit' in the run box
without the quotes. There should be 3 lines in the Autoexec.bat:
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
SET CTSYN=C:\WINDOWS
C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\SBLIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COM
Type REM with a space before each line, as shown below:
REM SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
Save the file and close the System Configuration Editor.
You can now restart Windows. You may still have the same problem as Windows
may still try to locate the DOS emulation. If this happens leave the
Emulation disabled and reinstall the drivers.
If you want to keep the DOS emulation then you will need to verify that it
is on IRQ 5 and no other device is using IRQ 5. You should go into your
BIOS and reserve IRQ 5 for Legacy devices first. Then in Device Manager
under the "Creative SB16 Emulation" properties, select the "Resources" tab.
Uncheck "Use Automatic settings", then select the arrow for the pull down
menu of "Settings based on" and select the first basic configuration. It
should probably use IRQ 5 but you may have to scroll down to find one that
uses IRQ 5. Once you have selected a configuration using IRQ 5 click "OK".
You will get a warning message from windows about setting resources yourself
and do you still want to do this, click "OK". Close System properties and
Windows should prompt you to reboot which you should do. If you still
continue to have the blue screen, try disabling the Creative SB16 emulation,
rebooting, reinstall the drivers, reboot, re-enable the SB16 emulation.
