This is the main problem with trying to troubleshoot this. The minute I
take the default settings away, the system locks in boot with the graphics
characters.

The floppy disk is not incorrectly connected. I tried to change that, and
found it has the same indication with the connector on both ways. However,
when booting from a floppy disk, it has to be on the original way.

If I press f1, and ignore the incorrect CMOS, the machine boots properly,
from whichever disk I am using.
