Robert,
I'm not very familiar with tape drives either, but the magazine Maximum
Linux had a CD included with last months issue (which is also the last issue
for them) that had evaluation & free versions of tape backup software.  It
also had reviews of the software.  I don't have the magazine, but do have
the CD from a friend.  If you can find it, it might help.
