Thinkpad's use the MWAVE modem.  Best way to get it to work is to download
the MWAVE software from the Thinkpad site of IBM.  In the first disk you
make, it will ask to you uninstall MWAVE files.  Tell it to do so and then
reinstall the modem's software with the software you downloaded  from IBM's
Thinkpad site.
