You will get a "port already open message" if you try to install the modem
while there is software running which monitors the port (i.e. any of the COM
ports). I have seen this happen before. It happened when someone was trying
to install a modem while PCanywhere was running, and he received the same
error. I believe this will also happen if you have fax software running at
the same time as trying to install the modem.
