Dave,
Have you ran chkdsk? Usually it does this at boot up, but be sure that
errors are corrected.
Be sure to defrag before using NG. Helps clean up any confusion NG may get.


I would not believe that 6.5 is the answer to this problem, but I use 6.5
and do not have these problems.  NG6.5 does tell you to do the above before
cloning a directory.
