Thanks very much!

The Western Digital utility, Data LifeGuard, took care of the problem. An
excellent util, I might add. Very easy and useful. Hard drive setup was a
breeze. More kudos go out to Western Digital's web site, which had the
answers to a bunch of odd Compaq quirks that I couldn't find referenced
anywhere on Compaq's site (not surprising). One example- the drive kept
coming up with an error on boot. Because the PC is older, it couldn't detect
the drive correctly (ez-bios, another great util from WD, takes it after
that point and detects the drive). Western Digital gave the solution- a
two-jumper fix on their drive makes the error go away. If you have a WD
drive and a Compaq PC, the answers can be found by searching for 'Compaq'
under WD's web site.

Thanks for the help!

My first suggestion would be is to backup your computers system files and
data files. Go to Western Digital's web site,
http://www.westerndigital.com/service/ and d/l their hard drive utility,
Data LifeGuard. Follow theinstructions to the letter and if your drive "is
not" severely damage, (according to the info contained in your post), you
should be able to repartition it and reinstall your OS and apps. Note: It
is helpful to all of "us" if you would post if this fixes the problem
because you may not be the only one with this sort of problem. HTH. :-)
