Hello Alan,
1.the best way to prevent your current situation is to backup
files: user.dat and system.dat and store them in some directory.
2.When something happens to your system you need to boot from DOS
boot disk and copy these files to your windows forlder by DOS
commands or some DOS shell like Norton Commander or smth like this.
Than you need to reboot PC.

Now do the following:
in your windows\sysbckup forlder there should be files like rb000.cab
or so. You need to write them to floppy than go to another PC with
RAR or CAB archiver than extract from this rb000.cab files system.dat
and user.dat than go back to your PC and go to step 2.
That's all.
