Hi Jack,

I used to have that problem too.  These are the ways to solve this:

A) Follow the maintenance tips on the HP site (which you have done).
B) Get a lintless swab and alcohol.  Clean the fluted black portion of
   the printer (this is the black plastic part directly next to and above
the                large black rollers).  You'll find a lot of ink and junk
to remove.
C) Use another swab and alcohol.  Remove both the black and color
   cartridges and clean the bottom of the black cradle.  Be sure
   to clean it well...lots of junk can accumulate in this area.

Lastly, if the above steps do not work.
D) Get a new ink cartridge and replace the old cartridge.  Sometimes,
   a new cartridge is all that is needed to fix the problem.  Old
   cartridges tend to clog up quite nicely.
