I sometimes use a small hardware testing program called TS-test to see if any of my hardware is failing.
I can't seem to find it on the net at the moment to give you a link, but it does help to let you know whether your problem is a hardware or software one.
The free version I use doesn't test everything, but tests alot. I've diagnosed lots of problems in the past using this program (on a floppy) and saved hours of troubleshooting.
This way at least you'd have a good idea whether your problem is hardware or software related.
Maybe someone else could give you a link to either this program or something very similar? Or maybe you could do a google search? Failing that, if you contact me via email, I could send it to you.
Worth a try I'd say, then you'd know where you are.
Good luck.
