I bought this second hand drive for my notebook but cannot get it recognized as a Master device in any system.(notebook/desktop)
This harddisk was made for NEC computers and somehow set to act only as Slave device. I have tried everything to set it to Master but nothing works.(Jumpers)

Is there somebody out there who can explain to me how the mechanism works by which the ATA controller knows that the connected HD is a Master or Slave device?
I know there is one pin (28) in the 40-pin connector called Spindle Sync/Cable select but I cannot figure out what this does.

It is very well possible that the drive is broken but even then it might be repairable.
At least I could give it a try.
