You didn't mention, but are you using 10-T Twisted pair?  If so, then:

Though the cable was made by a 'pro', make certain it's correct.  If
you use a 'hub' between 2 or more computers, then 'straight-through'
connectors are used.  However, if you go directly from one NIC to
another NIC without a hub in between, the wiring on one end of the
cable MUST have reversed connections. [a cross over cable]
