YOU WROTE
I am trying to load DOS on a 1gig hard drive which previously had linux on
it.
When I attempt to boot after formatting, using the /s option, the machine
hangs right after verifying dmi pool data. It displays 'LI' and that's it.

I deleted existing partition using fdisk (DOS) prior to formatting.
Is the boot sector messed up?
Is recovery possible using DOS fdisk or not?
I no longer have the original linux root/boot disks otherwise I would have
tried the linux version of fdisk.

WHAT I DID
IF FDISK using the /MBR switch, to overwrite the master boot record,
doesn't work... which it didn't for me a few months ago when I found myself
in a similar situation. Then grab one of the DISK OVERLAY programs. Most of
these programs are able to remove the setup on track zero. What I did was
use the overlay to get rid of the Linux then canceled out of the Overlay
and did the FDISK afterwards with the /MBR ... which worked then.

Good luck

Later
Gordon
