1) One reason for this is to keep them separate from anything else.
2) They might have viruses, or other stuff, and it's handy to check
   the whole dir.
3) If you want to find something you just downloaded, you don't have
   to look long.
4) You don't clutter your C:\.

   The "soft shutdown" is an option in newer motherboards that allows
the OS to turn off the PC by issuing a [software] command. This trick
is only possible in ATX motherboards.
   The example of this would be, if you click "Shutdown my computer" in
Windows9x, the PC will display "shutting down..." and in few sec. shut
down itself.
