My best bet would be that the onboard video is out on the system and that
when you try to add the PCI video card, that it is conflicting with either
the built in video, or something else on the board. If the computer has an
ISA slot, you might try an ISA video card.

The first thing that I would try is to access the bios if you can to
disbable the onboard video. The unfortunate thing is that even if you get
the machine working, it will be hampered by the limitation of a PCI video
card. I have worked on several eMachines, and I haven't seen one with an AGP
port yet. Granted they are all older units.
