As I sit here with my coke resting on one of my "coasters," I thought
I'd throw my 2 cents into this.

I have tried the various software (Adaptec, Nero, CDRWin) mentioned,
plus other more obscure programs and settled on CDRWin as the most
dependable and controllable.  I have also learned that working with
non-SCSI burners, 1X is the speed of choice.  Since getting over the "Oh
my God, it takes so long" syndrome I no longer produce coasters.  As a
matter of fact, I have never had a failure at 1x read/write.  I have
learned to use my burner as the reader as it seems to be more
accurate.   I create an image on my HD and burn the CD from the image.
I shut off everything except explorer and systray before I start.
Screensavers and power management are no longer there.  I used to ruin
about a third of my burned disks before I got to this point and my
success rate is now 100%.  Except for audio CD backups, every data CD I
backed up has minor problems when burned at 2X.  With 1X copies, they
are all correct.  I know it takes a while, but IMHO it is well worth it.
