I have never heard of powered headsets but that does not mean they do not
exist. Barring anything else that I might know, I know of no reason why you
need powered a headset. I have even had clients use unpowered, high
efficient speakers in the speaker jack. The output of typical, modern (I say
modern because, several years ago some SC had a small, less than 10w amp
that could be enabled/disabled.) sound cards is the same as what comes out
of portable player headset jacks.

Are you plugging the earphones into the speaker out jack of the sound card?
I take it that you are using the headset to talk on the phone through the
modem. If that be the case, not being familiar with this specific puter,
does it have a separate out jack for the modem.

Subject: Headphones

>My wife has a 1998 dell 233 MHz with W98 and IE5. Using Radio Shack
headphones she can talk, but can't hear through the headphones. I have been
told that she needs powered headphones to be able to both talk and hear. Can
someone verify that is correct or does she have a sound card problem? Her
sound card is a Yamaha and our local computer technician says he loaded the
latest driver for the card. Any help would be appreciated. I will purchase
powered headphones if that is the problem. Thanks, Clarence
