Since you put it that way, I guess I can venture a $.02's worth.  I only
have two computers and two printers just now and have ganged a kludge of
two A/B data switch boxes and one A-D 4way to switch between computers and
printers in any combination and even a good old DOS Interlnk setting with no
trouble for at least four or five years now.  Have had a TIMicroLaser
printer,  Kodak Color Ease Dye sub and an HP Deskjet 1120C at times.
Currently the latter two.  I always do my switching setup with the printers
powered off and in spite of various dire warnings to the contrary have never
experienced a problem.  Click the switches every now and then for good
measure on contact burnishing.
