It sounds like some kind of conflict. I think you are on the right track,
you probably need to install the latest "appropriate" VIA 4 in 1
drivers.Can you download them from another PC to a flash drive, and then
install them? If not, replace your old hard drive and then boot up,
download, install, and then install your new hard.

It wouldn't hurt to make sure you are using the latest BIOS to best support
your new hard drive.

But first, image your existing OS partition, so you can come back to this
point if everything goes wrong, .... an experience not all that unusual
when dealing with a VIA chipset.
