Look on Compaq's website for a BIOS or ROM upgrade. The BIOS/ROM is independent of the Compaq Diagnostic Partition on the hard drive. SP9847.exe looks to be the current version. This will creat a bootable diskette that will update the ROM. Good Luck.

Hi, listers. I need your help to solve the following problem.

System Description:

Compaq Presario 9642
OS: Win 95a
Memory: 72Mb

Problem:

DOS/Windows 95 sees 1.6 Gb Compaq Presario 9642 OEM installed Maxtor 71626 AP hard drive as 503 Mb drive following Quickrestore to original OEM Win 95a/OEM software configuration. Compaq setup/bios version 1.57c shows hard drive capacity as 1629 Mb with DOS/Windows operating system; Operating system is shown in Compaq Diagnostics as MSDOS V 7, Rev A. Maxtor Powermax diagnostics tests of the drive state that the power connection cable, jumpers, bios large drive support, and partition information is correct, and that the drive is operating properly with no errors--however, the drive fails the bios extension support test, and a message appears that states "..your system's bios does not support drives this large." Since the full capacity of the drive was recognized and utilized by DOS and Windows (including FDISK and Partition Magic) prior to the quick restore, something obviously occurred during the Quick Restore that corrupted full drive bios support for the drive.

It is my understanding that the CMOS, bios, and other system data is maintained on the Compaq Setup/Diagnostics partition, and not socketed on the mother board. Per directions in various FAQ's and instructions for SOFTPACS SP 2141, SP 2373, and SP 2824 identified on the Compaq support web site for Presario 9642 models, I have deleted, recreated, and updated the Compaq Setup/Diagnostics partition to Version 1.57c, but fdisk, Partition Magic, and Win 95 continue to see the drive as 503 Mb, including the 4 Mb Compaq Setup/Diagnostics partition. Other than the failure to recognize the full capacity of the drive, the computer and operating system operates normally with no problems.

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.
