I've not suffered this problem but the University of Bristol Information
Services posts the following at
http://www.bris.ac.uk/is/services/computers/general/fujitsu.html :

BIOS update for MPG3102AT-E and MPG3204AT-E
It appears that there is a potential data loss problem with some 10GB and
20GB hard disks purchased by the University in the first half of 2001. The
hard disks

Fujitsu MPG3102AT-E
Fujitsu MPG3204AT-E
may suffer data loss after extended use if they are of an insufficient BIOS
revision. BIOS revisions 80C2 and later should be safe, according to
Fujitsu.

We have made available (to members of the University of Bristol) a UBCSDISK
boot disk to perform the flash upgrade, if required. This is available from
ftp://jmp.cse.bris.ac.uk/PUB/IBMPC/Utilities/UBCSdisk/FujitsuFlash/Fujitsu.DSK

This disk will determine if you require the BIOS upgrade and apply it if so.
However, please only use the disk on systems you believe are affected by
this problem.

Perhaps it could save you a bit of trouble...
