There's always some risk, but mostly on cold winter days with low
humidity. And you can mitigate that risk by not moving around (or
shuffling your feet on the carpet) and staying in semi-constant contact
with the computer chassis. Other then that, I rarely take any
additional precautions during the 30 seconds between taking the memory
chip out of the packaging and putting it into the machine. (Holding the
memory chip by the edges as much as possible.)

Not sure what exactly model eMachines you have... but I would guess that
it could be a W3107? Not sure if it's running fast (PC3200) or slow
(PC2700) memory, but I see prices in the $65 range for a 512MB chip from
Memory4Less.

(Take careful note of Memory4Less's return policy. It used to be
somewhat stiff and unforgiving although I never had any big problems.
It's been a few years since I ordered from them.)

Corsair and Kingston (name-brand RAM) are about $55-$65 from NewEgg. You
can go to the Kingston/Corsair websites, plug in your eMachines model
number and they'll tell you what exactly to purchase.
