Without hearing the noise it is hard to pinpoint, but the first thing I
would suggest to check is the cooling fan on the CPU.  The best way to
isolate the noise is remove the case (for example next time when you hear
the noise) and listen (also can grasp or cover a fan, but ground yourself
well on the case).  Also, a higher-pitched whistle could be the hard drive
(I have only heard this with certain models, the Maxtor 5.x series comes to
mind, but others could do the same).
