I sit about 2 feet from the monitor (maybe an inch or two more at times), centered left/right, and close to centered top/bottom - perhaps a couple of inches above top/bottom midline.

I don't know if this is "backlight bleed" or "ISP glow" or something else, but I don't like it.

The problem with this question is that we don't know what, "not super
expensive," means.

Dell has a good reputation for quality monitors (at least the higher
priced ones) with a range of prices. I would never buy a Dell computer
(I'd build my own, of course), but my wife and I both have Dell
monitors. The $500+ one is recommended by one pro for photography work,
but there are other cheaper ones. ("Photography work" = a wide range of
accurate colors) If you do buy a Dell, buy it directly from them, as
some of their monitors have had issues, so warranty replacement would be
easier. You can check out their web site to see what's available.

The best thing for you to do might be to find a Best Buy (or other
retailer) that has several different monitors on display, so you can see
a demo for yourself.

I **think** that your problem with text is something wrong with the
monitor - maybe old age?

You don't need a 4ms response time if you're not gaming. A longer
response time would likely suit you just fine. But, you do want your
contrast.
