Brad,
I had a similar problem with an IBM scanner (parallel port) with feed thru to
a Panasonic printer with an on/off switch.  Using IBM's technical support we
discovered that the printer had to be turned on before the scanner was
recognized at boot.  Does your printer have a switch?
