I tried clean uninstall / reinstall of the VIA chipset "4 in 1" driver set.
I noticed in DirectX Diagnostic the no sound device was listed but it
indicated a setting of "Kernel Sound" or something similar.  Compared to
DirectX log file from before the incident, the sound was non-kernel.  I
since gave up on troubleshooting and reinstalled everything from scratch,
but still wonder about the kernel sound issue.  Notably, of many steps, the
2nd to last step in the Sound troubleshooting guide was ensuring speakers
were plugged in.

Try installing the FIC PCI bridge patch, or whatever it's called, for the
503 in
W98, it might do the trick.
