I wrote here a few weeks back for advice on my plan to upgrade my
netbook from XP Home to Win7 Home Premium. Amongst the really good
advice was that I download and run Microsoft's "Win7 Upgrade Advisor"
utility to make sure that my machine was up to the task.
Not surprisingly, that utility reported that the low-power-consumption
Atom CPU could not run 64-bit code and lacked the virtualization support
needed toi run the "XP mode" included with Win7 Ultimate and Pro
versions.
So this weekend I pulled the original 160 GB hard drive and replaced
it with a 750 GB drive and installed Win7. I have a USB adaptor for
2.5" drives, but so far the netbook doesn't recognize the old drive
attached that way -- there are a small number of files I'd like to save,
and that meant the install couldn't see the XP installation and so I had
to call Microsoft in order to activate the new OS.
I've saved space to install Ubuntu as well, and I'm very pleased with
this machine's new lease on life.
