I couldn't find the same exact setting in the properties of the ISP Icon but
did find extra settings under Control Panel/Modems but it didn't work. I've
just uninstalled a program called Atomica and voila the modem display is
back to the way it was.

Here's how you do it in W98SE, maybe you can extrapolate for XP......

Go to DialUpNetworking\(right mouse your ISP icon)\Properties\Configure(the
modem)\Connection\Advanced and in the 'Extra Settings' box, type W2 - this
causes the connection speed to be reported and not the port speed.  You can
also add m0 (that's em zero) which will mute the modem squawks.

I use both, so my settings read W2m0
