Can you still use Goback to revert to a time before this started happening? If so, try that again, then use System File Checker (SFC) on the tools menu of System Information (system tools on accessories menu to start). Use SFC to import from the Win CD a new defrag file. If that doesn't work, then go to your HD manufacturer's web site to download the utility that checks for drive errors. Western Digital has one, and I think Maxtor does also. Your HD is fairly old if it's OEM with a PII 450 system, and may be about to fail completely, which is what the manufacturer's utilities will tell you. Did you run a Scandisk Thorough on this drive? See if that turns up any problems.
