The options in Windows available to you for setting the resolution displayed
is based on the driver for your video card and the driver for the monitor.

If Windows has set a basic monitor driver, then Windows will believe that
any higher displays, such as 1024x768 will not work with the monitor.  If
the monitor supports higher displays, then you might try loading the appropriate
monitor driver.

But...  then again my opinion my be wrong based on some one using
a PC three years ago playing a some arcane game that over heated
the PC.
