In windows, select start, run, and enter into the 'open' box
sysedit
You will get cascading windows, the first for autoexec.bat. You are
interested in removing any lines that mention a mouse, from the first two
windows, autoexec.bat, and config.sys. To do this, type REM followed by a
space,at the beginning of any line that has the letters MOUSE in it. Now
select file, exit, and save your changes. Select Start, shutdown, restart.

As the pc reboots, you should be seeing a white text on black background
'information page' during the boot up of your computer, before windows
starts. In that screen, you should see a box listing your ports. You
should have one or two serial ports, 2F8 and 2E8. You can press the PAUSE
key on the top row, all the way to the right end of the keyboard, to give
you time to read this text screen. Press enter to continue booting. If you
don't see these codes, then someone or something in cmos setup has disabled
the serial port. Shutdown windows again, and when the message 'Press del to
enter setup' appears, press the del key. go to the peripherals page, and
adjust the serial ports to enabled. Save and exit. Now, if you don't get a
'windows detected new hardware' wizard to start automatically, go to control
panel, and run 'detect new hardware'. The mouse should be found and
installed.

I had 95 on my rather old computer it was a 486 at one time but presently
running an AMD K 6 on a 2 g HD.I lost my mouse somehow and I have tried a
few
things to make sure it wasn't a simple fix.I replaced the mouse, the 9 pin
hookup, and the cable.I installed upgrade98 and thought maybe it was just a
driver or something that got lost. Shouldn't the upgrade have replaced any
missing files? When I tried to boot from startup disk I could get no further
than "Mouse /f" and didn't know any more commands to continue on.I still
have
no mouse but I am able to use Mousekeys right now so I am sure the problem
can't be serious only mind numbing at best.
