Have you downloaded the latest drivers for your HP printer.

I started getting the same type of problems with an HP 970Cse along with my
parallel port
print speed dropping through the floor. If you don't have the latest
driver, you will be unable
to turn off the HP I/O in order to speed up the old LPT printing.

Unfortunately, I've ended up turning off the HP printer and using only my
Laser Printer since I
couldn't get any assistance from HP.
