Just a thought, though I'm sure you've already looked.  What software IS
installed to run the mouse?  Have you gone into Control Panel/Mouse to see
if there is a tab for "Wheel"?  The wheel just needs to be turned on if
that's the case.  If not, you're friend should contact the vendor where he
got his system to get his Intellimouse disk if they didn't give it to him.
