I ran into this problem before.
One quick way to fix this is to add NetBeui to your
protocols and disable File and printer sharing on the
TCP/IP protocol.  Unfortunately I don't think you'll
be able FTP between the two machines, but you will be
able to do file transfer through your Explorer
interface.
The other way to do it, would be to add another
network card to one of the machines and on that
machine attach the cable modem to one of the NIC's and
the hub(which the other PC is attached) to the other
NIC.  You get a firewall effect.  Just some idea's and
what I've run through already, hope this helps.
(Unfortunately, I'm assuming you're running a Windows
OS when you could be running a couple of Linux boxes
