Hi Roger,
From the Error and Event Messages Help, located on the CD under Tools in the
Resource Kit:
Event Message:
The device, name , did not respond within the timeout period.
Source Event Log Event ID Event Type
Various System 9 Error
User Action:
Check the cabling on the device named in the message. If the cabling is
working satisfactorily and you continue to receive this message, run
hardware diagnostics on the disk drive named and on its controller. You
might have to contact the vendor of the device for technical support.

Hi,

I've been using Windows 2000 Professional for about 5 months and had no
major problems till now. Windows takes a very long time to start up. It
stalls at the graphical "Starting Windows" screen when the progress bar gets
to about 50%. On further investigation in the event log there are four
identical error entries with every boot as follows...

Event Type: Error
Event Source: atapi
Event Category: None
Event ID: 9
Date: 12/03/2001
Time: 5:11:06 p.m.

I had installed a new Fujitsu 10.2 GB hard disk drive just prior to
installing the operating system. Is this an indication that the hard disk is
failing or is it an operating system problem? Any suggestions for checking
the hard disk integrity would be much appreciated. I've a lot of work on
this machine and yes it is backed up, but I'd rather not go through the
hassle of finding the drive has failed if I can prove to the vendor that it
has some serious issues.

Many thanks in advance.
Regards Roger Griffiths
