I recently installed a Maxtor external 40GB firewire hard drive. It was
very easy and works well. However, I discovered an interesting phenomenon.

When I copy a file from my internal (C) hard drive to the Maxtor, the file
sizes are 2-3+ time larger than they were on the C drive. When I trasfer
them to a CD-ROM via a burner they reduce in size to their C drive value.

Can anyone explain this? Can I/should I use a compression utility to stor
them on my external drive?
