All fixed!

I ended up taking more of the computer apart than I wanted.  I had
tried all the easily available slots and finally decided to try the
two that were up under all the ribbon cables.  I hated unplugging
things for access.

First try it loaded right up and set a COM3 up.

Works find. I just can't shut the speaker off!  Have two computers
with internal cards and even turning the volume off under devices I
still get the screeching modem exchanges!
