  Yes -- if it's not checked, it won't be done AT ALL.

  There are three basic approaches to making it work on the LAN but
not the Internet:

1.  Bind it only to local interface(s).  NT/2K/XP let you do that,
95/98/ME might not.

2.  Bind it to a non-routable protocol (NetBEUI) and NOT to TCP/IP.
(I've never gotten this to work, but others apparently have.)

3.  Install a firewall or router on the Internet connection that
blocks this service.

  In all three cases, though, it must be enabled on the PC.
