  There are several firewall utilities available for Linux, such as
"ipchains".  These basically turn the system into a router with filtering
capabilities.

  Since routing and filtering require little CPU speed, disk space, or fancy
graphics, this is a good application for an old box that may have fallen
behind in one or more of these areas, especially if you have an always-on
connection such as DSL or a cable-modem.
