It isn't that your dad's friend installed it work for only one gig, it's that your motherboard and operating system may not support drives bigger than 1 or 2 gigs.  How old is your computer, what operating system, what motherboard.  You'll need to know the latter to see if you can download and install a BIOS update so that it will be capable of seeing the whole drive.
