Hi Robert,

Replacing or upgrading the CPU (Central Processing Unit) is a simple and
fairly quick procedure. With the limited information provided, I think what
you have is the AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (1.533GHz) with a 266MHz frontside bus
(FSB). Without a corresponding upgrade of the motherboard and memory, you
could install up to the AMD XP 2400+ which runs at approximately 1.93GHz,
plus or minus. Depending on what you do with the computer, you may or may
not notice an increase in speed.

I suggest you take a long look at your computer and weight the pros and cons
of the cost of upgrading versus the price of a new computer which would have
the newest hardware, software, etc. The price of the 2400+ will be in the
vicinity of $70-$100, depending on where you find it. If you decide to
upgrade memory and other hardware, the overall cost could easily equal the
price of a new computer. Just something to think about.
